Dr. Calvin Dyck's Profile

Performing
Calvin has performed around the world and is an active freelance performer with numerous organizations. Besides being the concertmaster for the Vancouver Island Symphony, Calvin enjoys performing in chamber ensembles and as a soloist. The romance of the violin and the challenge to express himself and convey the essence of the music beckons him.  Watch Calvin's performance in a film, "Corona Station", shown on Bravo channel.

Conducting
The supreme experience for a musician is to have the privilege to guide and lead an orchestra through one of the masterworks. Calvin has conducted the Il Divo Orchestra, Pacific Mennonite Children's Choir, Vancouver Island Symphony, Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, and others.

Teaching
Calvin has held a faculty position at Trinity Western University for 13 years, teaches at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and has taught at Biola University and Scripps College. He also has taught violin privately for 20 years at his studio in Abbotsford. His students have won numerous awards including RCM medals, and former students have gone on to play with the National Youth Orchestra, or study at such institutions as the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, San Francisco Conservatory, Biola University, and the University of Victoria, among others.

Adjudicating
Calvin has adjudicated for many festivals in different communities. Some of examples include the festivals in Winnipeg, Kelowna, Prince George, Sechelt, Whitehorse, Burnaby, and Langley.

Producing
As a professional musician, Calvin is connected with communities at all levels through concertizing, conducting youth orchestras, organizing concerts, and encouraging community orchestras. He has been producing shows for 10 years, most notably "Songs, Strings, and Steps", as well as shows with artists such as Ben Heppner and the Canadian Tenors.

Workshop
Calvin is available for workshops, and speaks on a variety of topics including Practicing, Peak Performance - playing "in the zone", and "The Music Business", for example. He also provides master classes, informative lectures and several other entertaining educational events for schools.
